Sarina Singh

After finishing a business degree in Melbourne, Sarina bought a one-way ticket to India where she completed a corporate traineeship with the Sheraton. During this time she met an aspiring photographer who requested her to write a paragraph for one of his photos in the hope that he could get it published. The magazine accepted his photo and asked Sarina to turn her 100 word ‘caption’ into a 3000 word feature – and so began her freelance writing career. She soon landed a job with an American news agency where she worked as a foreign correspondent, covering everything from Indo-Pakistan nuclear tensions to financial matters. Other assignments took her to East Africa, Nepal the Middle East and Pakistan, where she interviewed a notorious Mujahideen warlord at his clandestine headquarters near the Afghanistan border.

After four years in India, Sarina returned to Australia and pursued post-graduate journalism qualifications. She has worked on around 30 Lonely Planet titles, often as Coordinating Author, including seven editions of India, three editions of Rajasthan, two editions of South India, Mauritius, Reunion & Seychelles, Aboriginal Australia & the Torres Strait Islands, Australia & New Zealand on a Shoestring, North India, Africa on a Shoestring, Sacred India, Citiescape-Delhi, Bluelist, The Asia Book and Pakistan & the Karakoram Highway.

Sarina has also contributed to numerous international publications including the UK’s Sunday Times and USA’s National Geographic Traveler and is the author of Polo in India. She has also written/directed an award-nominated documentary film about contemporary Indian ‘royalty’, which made its debut at the Melbourne International Film Festival and was subsequently screened on television in Australia and Europe. Sarina has appeared as a specialist (India) commentator on the high-rating Australian television travel show, Getaway, with presenter Catriona Rowntree.
